Teaching
Aerospace Structures (co-tenant)
Mandatory course of the III year (first semester) of the BSc programme in Aerospace Engineering
Number of credits: 9 (3)
Description and objectives: The aim of the course is to teach fundamentals of structural analysis and basic methodologies for modelling and design aerospace structures. Aerospace loads analysis, static loads response, principles of dynamics and stability are also studied. At the end of the lessons students will be able to use their knowledge on the study of the elements of aerospace structures both statically and dynamically.
Class hours: 90 (30)
Lab / exercise hours: 20 (15)
Class attendance: optional
Evaluation: written test + oral exam

The lessons of the course Aerospace Structures for the Academic Year 2023-24 will start on September 25th 2023 (Monday) and will continue until December 22nd 2023 (Friday). The lessons will be held at room 38 of the Civil and Industrial Engineering Faculty in Via Eudossiana 18 with the following time-schedule:
Monday 10:00 - 12:00 - room 38
Tuesday 10:00 - 12:00 - room 38

Mandatory course of the I year (second semester) of the MSc programme in Space and Astronautical Engineering
Number of credits: 9
Description and objectives: The course gives an introduction to space multibody dynamics with an emphasis on flexible body dynamics. A kinematic description of rigid bodies is presented first, drawing attention to different parametric representations of the body’s orientation in space. Rigid body dynamics is then treated via a description of constraints (integrable vs. non-integrable), followed by the derivation of Kane’s equations from D’Alambert principle and the final description of Newton-Euler equations of motion by means of Lagrangian dynamics. A brief overview of the theory of elasticity is then offered, introducing the structural eigenproblem as a mean to reduce the large dimensionality of the elastic problem. The dynamics of deformable bodies is then described posing particular focus on the onset of nonlinear couplings between rigid and elastic displacements. A finite element approach is therefore adopted to solve the dynamic problem, resorting to various coordinates reduction techniques to reduce the models’ order. A brief hint to the large deformations problem is finally given. Class lectures will be integrated by workshops on the use of the software ADAMS by MSC.
